Food, Food Glorious Food

From street side sellers to world class restaurants, Bali has it all. The food in Bali is amazing, you can eat from 50 cents at a roadside Warung, or for $40, you can  eat at a top world class international restaurant, and there is everything in-between. 
There are many cooking classes available if you would like to learn about local cuisine. Below are a couple of  typical local dishes.

Gado-Gado

Gado-gado, also known as Lotek, is an Indonesian salad of slightly boiled, blanched or steamed vegetables and hard-boiled eggs, boiled potato, fried tofu and tempeh, and lontong, served with a peanut sauce dressing, usually quite spicy.The best Gado-Gado is usually purchased from the small Warungs or street sellers. they grind the chillies and peanuts freshly using a mortar and pestle, when finished it is usually served on a banana leaf.  In 2018, gado-gado was promoted as one of 5 national dishes of Indonesia.

Fish Soup

This is one of my favourites. This really delicious soup, which is more like a fish stew, is made with light coloured ocean fish, I particularly like it with Mahe Mahe, lots of ginger, fresh Turmeric, Lime leaves and chillis, served with rice.
You can find variations of this dish in many warungs and restaurants.

Some like it hot!

Typically a lot of Balinese and Indonesian food can be very spicy, but no need to worry, if you don't like it so spicy, they will always adapt the dish to suit your taste.
Sambal Olek, which is basically ground chillis, is great to keep in your fridge to add to your favourite dishes if you're cooking. Ground chillis, with salt, vinegar and a little sugar, locals swear by the fact it tastes better using the mortar and pestle, you can really work a sweat up making this.
