Bali has an amazing array of vehicles on the road, some of the local people are very creative with the way they transform a simple mode of transport into something utterly unique. There are motorbikes transformed into “Harley” look a likes, regular 4 wheel drives, transformed into tank like cars, with their huge adapted wheels.
Driving along the roads, looking at the various adapted vehicles, is a total feast for the eyes.
Recently I stumbled upon this little gem, it looks like something from “Back To The Future”.
It pulled up at the beach, and 6 teenagers jumped off. It was made from a motorbike base, with lots of bits and pieces added, slightly resembling a tank, but certainly no threat to anybody.
Balinese people, are very artisitic and authentic, this shows throughout their expression with their paintings, tattoos, which they are famous for, and the way they adapt various forms of transportation.
Luckily, there are not the same stringent laws regards this in Indonesia, as there are in most Western countries.
Desite no trains or public transport as such in Bali, it is still easy to get around, with bus services and the good old “Bemo”, a mini bus, usually about 30 years old and falling to bits with rust, they provide a cheap way of getting around, and what a great way to meet local people.
A lot of tourists rent motorbikes when they visit Bali, however, this is really quite dangerous if you are not used to the local driving, and also, you are generally not covered by your holiday insurance for this. In my opinion, a better alternative, is to hire a car, or a driver, still very inexpensive, and much safer.
